Brass Handles

Brass Handles are a classic in door hardware, used extensively in more traditionally styled houses. Antique brass handles and bronze look stunning on solid wood doors in a classically styled interior. Brass handles are available on a variety of back plate styles including square, rounded, stepped, Georgian roped and Regency beaded with levers.

Brass handles range from Georgian, Regency and Victorian classic styles suited to sympathetic renovations of period houses where authentic brass handle styles are required. The 1920s saw the birth of geometric shaped brass handles and quality materials and one can also opt for the art deco quality brass handles now available in a range of beautiful finishes. Brass is a very popular material for door and window furniture. Polished brass handles are a stunning bright gold colour and will enhance any type of interior, but is probably seen more in traditional or period homes.

Most brass door handles are often made of solid brass which are then polished or plated. The most popular finishes are polished brass while satin brass handles are slowly increasing in demand. Brass handles in satin brass gives the material a matt, slightly textured finish which looks very effective indeed, particularly on natural wood doors. Antique brass handles are also very attractive on old pine, or mellow oak doors and windows and, if you are looking for an authentic antique look then go for the antique brass handles. Brass handles and door knobs are available in a massive range of styles, from classic modern to authentic period. The brass handles in the Georgian rope design and Regency beaded design perfectly complement interiors from these periods.

Polished brass handles are simply the base brass material polished to a high shine and then clear lacquered to protect the brass handle from corrosion. Brass handles are usually lacquered and under normal circumstances should give many years of service. Brass door handles and window furniture can also be unlacquered. This means that over time and with normal handling, brass handles will lose their initial shine and become more mellow and 'antique' looking. Unlacquered brass handles however require regular cleaning with a brass cleaning product.

Brass handles should be cleaned with a cloth moistened with soapy water and then dried thoroughly, or, alternatively, wiped over with a soft cloth with beeswax. Metal cleaners, furniture polish or chemical sprays should never be used on brass handles. Brass handles in a polished finish should be handled carefully to retain the original lacquer for as long as possible. Rings will scratch the surface of the lacquer and it will eventually break down and start to tarnish the brass handles. However, careful handling of the brass metal will ensure that these brass handles lasts for many years and retains its beautiful shiny finish. As a matter of fact, the finish will become more beautiful on brass handles with the years, depending on the polishing skill and zeal. The efforts are most rewarding since the brass handles will eventually have a very beautiful appearance that resembles antique brass products, similar to the hardware mounted on historical homes.
